Overkill’s The Walking Dead Releases New Gameplay

During E3 2018’s PC Gaming Show, Overkill Software and Starbreeze Studios decided to unveil the companies’ 4-player co-op The Walking Dead project by releasing a gameplay trailer that quickly cut in between various scenes of intense action that will be found in the title. Now, actual gameplay video has shown up online that offers a more authentic take on how the experience will be for players, with the combat looking somewhat stilted and repetitive.

As seen below in the eight minutes of fluid gameplay from Overkill’s The Walking Dead, the footage switches between the perspectives of each playable survivor, with each character wielding melee weapons such as a baseball bat with nails or a spear. All members of the party are also capable of carrying and operating firearms like SMGs, revolvers, and sniper rifles. Unfortunately, though, the animations for the melee attacks are stiffly executed, and killing zombies seems to provide no real challenge, as the survivors are mostly able to take them down by collectively bludgeoning them over and over again.

Another huge problem that players of Overkill’s The Walking Dead will surely tire of is hearing their party members pointing and saying, “Walker” whenever there’s a zombie in the vicinity. In the above gameplay, the word seems to be spoken relentlessly as if the player isn’t aware of the undead enemy no less than four feet away from them. And when human baddies are found posted up, the survivors almost incessantly say, “There”, totally breaking the immersion of the stealth aspect required of the mission.

All things considered, it appears as if Overkill’s The Walking Dead definitely needs some more time in the oven, for this latest portion of gameplay comes off as a Dead Island rehash with little else to set it apart than its post-apocalyptic urban environment. Without a doubt, the title’s cinematic trailers were gorgeous, but there seems to be a chasm in quality between the project’s more filmic features and its actual core mechanics.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead is set to release on November 6, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
